Know When Light Rail Fully Returns…

Dates on when light rail service returns on the rest of the system will be revealed tonight. Carolyn Gonot, CEO and General Manager of the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), will report on the dates when full light rail service on the rest of the Green Line and Blue Line will return. Also, read from VTA the current timeline on when full light rail service is being restored, and all of its phases.

Also, compensation for victims (and their families) of the May 26 shootings at VTA’s Guadalupe Yard is due to be approved. It’s an addendum from action the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors took on Wednesday to help the victims of May 26 and their families.

Welcome Back, Light Rail

Partial service on Silicon Valley’s light rail system returns today. At around 8am this morning, service on the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) Orange Line returned to service.

Also, partial service on the Green Line between Old Ironsides and Civic Center light rail stations was restored today. VTA light rail will be FREE to ride from now until September 12.

No current ETA is available for when light rail service south and west of Civic Center station will be restored.

Meanwhile, do you typically ride VTA light rail to or from Campbell or South San Jose? Check out our alternate VTA bus guide to the light rail shutdown. It lists alternate VTA bus lines that can be used in place of light rail, until full service is restored. That guide will be edited to reflect the partial return of VTA light rail service before Monday morning.

Major VTA Service Changes On Dec. 28

Next Meetings For the “Next Network”

For transit in Silicon Valley, 2017 is off to a fast start.  In addition to changing its logo, colors, and tagline, the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) is holding meetings in January and February to take your input on its “Next Network” bus and light rail service restructuring proposal.  Recall VTA’s prior bus service restructuring in 2008 which has been documented, as a guide.

If approved by the VTA Board of Directors in April, changes will take affect this fall.

Public meetings have already been held in cities like San Jose and Milpitas, with more to follow until the end of February.  More on the VTA’s “Next Network” proposal – and some of our thoughts on it so far – are below.

Fatal Greyhound Bus Crash In S. San Jose

Tuesday morning’s commute from south of San Jose proved to be a nightmare. At around 6:30am this morning, a Greyhound bus from Los Angeles to Oakland overturned and crashed on Highway 101, just south of Highway 85 in southern San Jose. As of 8:30am, two people have died and 18 have been injured.

The resulting traffic gridlock on Highway 101 northbound has caused at least 30 minute delays on VTA’s 121 and 168 express bus lines from Morgan Hill and Gilroy. Also, delays are expected on Monterey-Salinas Transit’s 55 and 86 bus lines between San Jose and Monterey County.

See your favorite news outlet for more information regarding this tragic bus crash. One definitely must consider use of public transportation like VTA or Caltrain today, if you have not done so already. Let this also be a reminder to SLOW DOWN if you must drive.
